Alaska is a bucket list trip for many people showcasing amazing views, animal encounters, and a chance to connect with a culture that cares about the environment. For myself, Hoonah and Icy Straight Point is that spot. This port is by far one of my favorites because it has not been infiltrated by diamond jewelers, fast food chains, and major tour companies. Icy Straight and Hoonah is a location that is run by the locals and still cares about tourism as well as quality. I had the chance to go out with Alaska Whale and Drone Tours to experience a “real Alaskan adventure” from the water and above!
This 3-hour tour is locally owned and operated and showcases amazing wildlife experiences from both the water as well as above via drone footage and photography. Let’s be clear, there are a ton of whale tours in Alaska, however, Hoonah is a killer spot to see Humpback and Orca whales and more! What sets this tour apart is the chance to see these amazing animals from above as this tour takes a professional drone out to capture breeching, bubble feeding, and more from the air above the boat!
On our tour, we saw over 9 whales, mostly Humpbacks who we saw bubble feeding a few times from the boat as well as from the videos that were taken from above! Along with the whales, we saw sea lions, otters, and a few surprises that I don’t want to give up so you can be surprised when you take this tour for yourself!
What else makes this tour special is the fact that the boats only hold 14 people which allows you amazing views of the wildlife and nature without having to bump into a ton of other people. The tour also gives you the chance to take home drone footage that is shot from the boat while you are out to share with friends, family, and of course social media!
