Wicked on Broadway opens to thunderous applause, tears at the Dr. Phillips Center
We all know and love the classic film “The Wizard of Oz” from our childhood. We see what happens when Dorthy goes to the land of Oz but what we never knew was what led up to the house landing on the Witch? Wicked, a Broadway phenom, opened last night here in Orlando at the Dr. Phillips Center for its 18-day run and we wanted to pass on our review of what some consider the best musical of all time!
The musical is the surprising tale of an unlikely friendship between two women in the Land of Oz. The musical tells the untold story of the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good, long before Dorothy drops in. Elphaba, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. Glinda is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. The remarkable odyssey of how these unexpected friends changed each other’s lives for good has made Wicked one of the world’s most popular musicals.
The show, which runs 2.5 hours with a 15-minute intermission, showcases what happens when opposites attract. The Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good become friends at school when forced to board together and learn how to not only get along with someone misunderstood but also how those people can make us great!
The show tackles some hard-hitting subjects of life including finding love, bullying, acceptance of others, self-sacrifice for the greater good, and of course saying goodbye to those we love.
For those who have not seen the production, the love of Wicked stems from the elaborate sets, musical score, and a storyline that we can all relate to from our personal experiences in life. Wicked has been declared “a cultural phenomenon” by Variety and “the best musical of the decade” by Entertainment Weekly. Wicked has been performed in over 100 cities in 14 countries around the world including the USA, Canada, Brazil, Austrailia and more.
Wicked is one of those musicals that brings out the emotions in the audience which was evident looking around at intermission and seeing the mass amount of people crying in joy over the acting, music and the message that this show gives each and every performance.
One thing is for sure, Wicked is one for the ages that needs to be seen by lovers of the theater, music, choreography and of course amazing acting!
