BBQ restaurants in Orlando BEWARE! Pig Floyds is coming for you!
BBQ is one of my favorite choices of things to eat. If I had a choice I would BBQ everything that I eat! I love the smokey flavor, the meats, and all the side dishes that are typically associated with BBQ. A Few months ago I over heard a friend talk about a new BBQ restaurant in Orlando called Pig Floyds. Since then that name has crossed my path more than a few times. With so much buzz, I knew that I had to check out Pig Floyds for myself!
The restaurant is located at 1326 N. Mills Ave in Orlando. One thing that stuck out for me is that they are open 7 days a week, which is uncommon for BBQ restaurants here in Orlando. The restaurant is what you would hope for in a BBQ joint. Fresh smell of meat and smoke when you park, a ton of people sitting inside and outside, and a line at the door. All great signs of what was to come!
I sat down with the owner Thomas to talk about the restaurant and where he came from. Thomas started out his venture on a food truck and knew that BBQ was something that he wanted to do as a full time restaurant. Thomas along with his dad opened the doors to Pig Floyds a little over 11 months ago and they have not looked back since!
In just 11 months, they have become one of the most popular BBQ joints in Orlando, and recently placed 2nd overall for BBQ from Orlando Weekly’s Best of Orlando 2015 awards! I know what you are thinking. How can a brand new restaurant take 2nd place in a category as difficult as BBQ! Well once the food started coming out of the kitchen I knew the answer!
The food is downright amazing! Amazing is a word that I do not use loosely but it was that good. I think I only muttered the word “damn” after my first bite of his ribs! The BBQ here is different than most BBQ as it has a multicultural influence. The food is a great combo of Latin, Caribbean, and Asian zing in both the meats as well as the sides!
At the tasting I started out with the ribs which had an Asian kick to them. The ribs came with beans and rice and fried plantains. Like I said before the ribs alone were enough to get me to come back but the rest of the food was the icing on the cake! So many restaurants focus on the wrong things, but Pig Floyds does it right. The do not complicate food, they use as little ingredients as possible and do it right the first time! The beans and rice were seasoned perfectly and the plantains were sweet with just the right amount of sweetness!
I also had the brisket which was done the way that I like it! Pig Floyds doesn’t have a lean option for brisket which gives it that flavor as well as moisture! The meat was tender and had a ton of great flavor without overdoing the smokiness.
Last I tried some of their tacos. I started out with the pork belly taco. The taco has smoked pork belly, citrus peanut slaw, dragon sauce, and scallions. The pork belly had a ton of great flavor and the toppings went with the taco wonderfully!
I then had the shrimp and sausage taco. This taco contains sautéed shrimp, chorizo, grilled corn, pickled red onions, scallions and cilantro sauce! This taco was my favorite and had so much flavor that I knew what I had to have when I return to Pig Floyds!
Overall, there is only one thing to say! THANK YOU PIG FLOYDS FOR DOING BBQ JUSTICE! So many people try to step out of the box and fail but luckily for all of us Pig Floyds has succeeded! The food was killer, the staff was wonderful, and Thomas the owner has such a great vision! Pig Floyds is here to stay and I know will be expanding very soon! If there is one person who should be worried, it would be number 1 on the Best of BBQ list… Pig Floyds is coming for your title!
