Hamilton: Is It Really Worth The Hype?!?

Hamilton Musical

Hamilton the Musical is one of the hardest musicals to get tickets for, but is it worth the hype?

Hamilton the Musical opened on Broadway in 2015 and since then has been one of the hardest tickets to get. The show received a record setting 16 Tony nominations and won 11 of them including Best Musical as well as winning a Grammy Award. Fans of the show rave about how genius the music, acting and dancing are so I was excited when the show was announced to come to Orlando. I attended the show on Wednesday night and wanted to share my opinion on what I thought about the performance.

First off, I will say that I did have the soundtrack prior to seeing the show and liked some of the songs prior to seeing the show live. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the show is a lyrical genius for sure but I was eager to see just how the show fit up to the hype of the soundtrack.

Joseph Morales, who plays Alexander Hamilton, had a huge set of shoes to fill but played the part to perfection! Coming into the show, I thought I would judge him by my Lin-Manuel standards but was left speechless by his stage presence. Nik Walker, who is Aaron Burr in the show, matches his musical talent with his demand for attention while on stage to really make you want to see the show again.

Marcus Choi (George Washington) and Morales (Alexander Hamilton) had a stage chemistry that could not have been more genius and in my opinion, Jon Patrick Walker stole the show with his comedic timing genius in his role as King George!!

The ladies of the show and the envy of all the Schuyler sisters were cast by Ta’rea Campbell (Angelica), Shoba Narayan (Eliza), and Nyla Sostre (Peggy). These ladies put my bottom jaw on the floor with their musical talent, dancing, and constant demand for my attention while on stage!

Back at the question on hand; does Hamilton live up to the hype? My answer is no it doesn’t.  It surpasses the hype and then some!! I could not explain to you in words just how amazing this show is, and more importantly, how this cast really took the show to a new level!! I have been watching Broadway shows for over 25 years now and the title of my favorite show was RENT… until now! Yes, Hamilton won over my heart and I will be a lifetime fan!

If you want to see Hamilton in Orlando or Tampa, I will start by saying good luck. Tickets have been sold out for months but there is still hope. If you download the official Hamilton app on your phone you can enter the lottery for a chance to see the show at a cheap price! I will admit I am entering daily to see the show again (Don’t judge me… Yes I would gladly see the show 10 more times if I’m given the chance).

The show is playing now here in Orlando at the Dr. Phillips Center and runs until February 10th, then they head off to Tampa at the Straz Center where they play Feb 12th until my birthday, March 10th! (Yes, that is a shameful plea for tickets to see the show again on my birthday… stop judging me!)
