A Family Kayak Adventure Like No Other
On our trip to St. Augustine, we traded cobblestone streets for paddles and jumped into the GEOTrippin Kayaking Tour on the Matanzas River. Ashley, the girls, and I were ready for dolphins, sea turtles, and whatever else the river wanted to show us.

The Matanzas River is breathtaking but can be tricky to kayak without experience. That’s where GEOTrippin came in. Our guide knew the best wildlife spots, how to work with the currents, and which narrow channels would take us to hidden corners most people never see. Little did we know, we were in for an adventure we never expected!
Wildlife and Waterways
We didn’t have to wait long for our first animal sightings. Dolphins danced on top of the water as we entered the water! The girls loved watching the fish jump out of the water near us, and wading birds kept watch from the shoreline. The plants were just as fascinating, with species that thrive in the unique mix of salt and fresh water here.
Every turn in the river brought something new. Some stretches were calm and glassy, others opened into wide, breezy expanses. The mix kept the day exciting and full of surprises.
A Rainstorm, an Island, and a Taste of the Wild
Halfway through, the Florida skies decided to give us a little adventure of their own. A sudden rainstorm pushed us toward a small, uninhabited island. Instead of just waiting it out, our guide turned it into an experience—teaching us about the native plants and even letting us taste some wild-growing edible vegetation.

It was one of those moments you don’t plan for but never forget.
The Girls’ Favorite Part
For Anna and Ruby, the highlights weren’t just the dolphins. They loved the secret tunnels formed by mangroves, the quiet inlets that felt like our own private paradise, and the thrill of discovering a side of St. Augustine most visitors miss.
