Step aside Disney, there is a new Cinderella in town (for a short time)
Cinderella on Broadway opened in Orlando yesterday to a packed out house at the Dr Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. The show, which is a Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, tells the story of Cinderella and her daily struggle to find true love while dealing with her evil stepmother and stepsisters. I was at the performance yesterday and also had a chance to meet some of the cast and crew at the after party and wanted to share my thoughts not only on the show, but the people who make it happen day in and day out!
Growing up in Washington, DC, I had many opportunities to attend many broadway performances so I was clearly excited to be able to review Cinderella. Cinderella on Broadway follows what most say is the true Cinderella story, which has some variation from the Walt Disney World classic. From the opening notes in the overture to the final bow I was held in awe of the music, the humor, and of course the cast!
The show has some amazing special effects such as fast costume changes, the transformation of the pumpkin into the coach and the Fairy Godmother flying around the stage while singing to Cinderella! Unlike some Broadway shows, Cinderella on Broadway is great for families as the high energy, music, and humor keeps the kids (and kids at heart) entertained!
I also had the chance to sit down and enjoy dinner with the cast and crew after the show to speak about the tour, Orlando, as well as what they thought of the Dr. Phillips Center. Aymee Garcia, who plays Charlotte in the musical, said that first off the Dr Phillips Center “is one of the most beautiful and well laid out theaters she has worked in.” She stated that most theaters that are older may be beautiful but have little to no room backstage however the Dr Phillips Center blew her expectations out of the water. While here in Orlando some of the cast and crew visited Disney and Universal, however Aymee took the time to just explore the city. “I grew up in Miami and was a Disney nerd! Its nice to be able to explore Orlando and not worry about the theme parks while i’m here this time!”
I absolutely loved the show and has quickly become one of my favorites! If you are in or around Orlando, I highly suggest trying to catch a show before the stroke of Midnight on the 15th!
The show runs from today until November 15th at the Dr Phillips Center. Tickets to the show start at 38.50 and can be purchased here!
